Safe Recommended Joint Supplements

Some of my favorite ingredient mixes have " * " next to it

These are some supplements that I have sorted through to check for preservatives etc. I have added each one and put my opinion on them. Most have some small amount of preservatives but I weeded out the worst ones. If you have any questions or recommendations on these or other supplements, please feel free to email me. Always remember, anything coming from water, can and probably will contain a certain amount of mercury. So use it wisely.

Some of these are made for humans and are safe to give. I checked ingredients. Not all human supplements are safe so if you find something and are unsure, PLEASE email me and I will verify the ingredients for you. Human dosage is equivalent to a 150 lb human, so adjust dosage from there.

Below when reading ingredients, also pay attention the the "mg" in each ingredient. If you have a large dog or one in bad shape, you want larger amounts in mg's.

Discontinue use of supplements at least 24-48 hours before surgery..depending on your dog's severity of joint problems.
Stop Vit E and fish oils 7 days prior to surgery
Finding a good mix may not always be in one supplement. I myself use 3 different types plus fish oils for joint support.
Make sure one contains Glucosamine and the others with herbs that fight inflammation.

Use to relieve pain and inflammation and help increase mobility.
Can be used as a preventative before activity.

UPDATE: They have changed their ingredients in this. Has more junk ingredients in it. I would use only as needed for joint pain.

Can add whole capsule into food or treat or open capsule and sprinkle into wet foods. (FYI-Has a slight bitter taste to it).

Lumbrex

It’s heart-breaking to see an older dog struggling to get to its feet and not be able to go on its walks. At night, they may scrabble ineffectively to rise, becoming agitated and soiling themselves in the process.

Worse still is the small dog that becomes paralyzed from intervertebral disc disease. Some dogs can get out for their walks but have hunched stiff backs that make them stagger; or they may have to hop on one leg because of sciatica or a luxated patella.

All of these dogs suffer from diminished circulation to their spinal column that gets even worse in cold wet weather and especially at night, when they often wake their owners with their panting and pacing just to get the blood flowing through their aching joints. Some dogs even wake screaming at night if the stiffness has progressed to neck vertebrae fixations and spasms.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, pain relievers and steroids are often tried for these dogs, but if the pain or paralysis can’t be managed or they go on to become incontinent, many of them end up getting put to sleep.

Anti-inflammatory drugs work like icepacks, drawing blood away from an area, but these dogs need increased circulation to halt the degeneration and inflammation, restore suppleness, and relieve nerve and spinal cord impingement. Physical therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic and PEMF along with a real food diet help greatly to improve blood flow to the spine and so do formulas like Lumbrex, which has been used for these purposes for over 1400 years.

As circulation improves, older dogs become stronger within the first several days to weeks, allowing drugs to slowly be discontinued. Disc dogs may take a few months to walk again but chiropractic, acupuncture and PEMF expedites and improves results.

Once the maximum benefit of Lumbrex is seen, consider adding Voltrex to spark fruther improvements. For FCE cases or disc dogs where surgical repair was attempted but now the dog is worse, use Voltrex first. Transition to Lumbrex only once initial improvements are finally seen. Reduce dose in the event of loose stools

Voltrex

Anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat arthritis, hip dysplasia, disc disease and ligament damage are very beneficial in the first few days following injury, but continued use of these pain relievers actually hinders long term healing, by cutting off the blood supply those tissues need to heal. Feeding of processed diets likewise interferes with joints and ligaments getting the circulation they need for their inflammation to resolve. If the situation continues, joints gradually deteriorate and may become thickened and permanently deformed.

Voltrex supports normal blood flow to joints and ligaments so healing can occur without compromising pain relief. As joints and ligaments heal over several weeks or months, anti-inflammatory drugs are needed less and less, which allows the pace of healing to accelerate. Meanwhile, other joints and ligaments on the verge of injury receive support as well, such that Voltrex supports the whole body becoming stronger and less prone to injury in the future.

Improvements from the improved joint circulation should begin in the first few days, but it may take many months before ligaments and joints are completely healed. Over that time, lameness becomes more intermittent, allowing anti-inflammatory drugs to be used only as needed to relieve pain, instead of so often that they hinder healing. Animals can stay on their feet longer, get up faster and appear more free and comfortable in their movements.

How quickly and fully the joints heal depends upon several factors, including whether the animal is on a real food meat- and vegetable-based diet, and whether other therapies like PEMF, acupuncture and chiropractic are being used to fully restore joint circulation and healing. Once dogs have plateaued in their initial improvements on Voltrex, switch them to Lumbrex.

Besides healing joints, Voltrex also supports the healing of deep spinal cord injuries, such as from severe disc prolapse, FCE or failed attempts at surgical repair. Use Voltrex for about two to three weeks before adding in Lumbrex

ArthrOrganics Canine Joint Formula

Joint pain in pets is a common condition. More than 20% of dogs over one year old, are suffering this painful debilitating condition.
The causes of joint pain in pets are very similar to those in humans. Hereditary factors, diet and repetitive wear and tear are associated with joint destruction.
Additionally, the family pet, has become the victim of a lack of exercise, resulting in extra weight. In both humans and animals, extra weight causes undue stress on the joints and greatly increases the chance of developing joint pain.

Type II is specific for joints which contains bovine cartilage including trachea and is a natural source of collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs); and I and III are specific to skin, hair, and nails. DC-Y by MVP (for horses but used in dogs and humans)

Picture
This is for horses as you can see and is made into a pellet but is safe for your dog..and even humans.

Small dogs: 1/2 tsp - 1 tsp
Med dogs: 1 tsp - 1  1/2 tsp
Large dogs: 1  1/2 - 2 tsp

Adjust dosage as needed... too high of a dose can cause some loose stools..just work up slowly to the recommended amount.

Get you a coffee grinder and grind these up and pour into foods. I swear by this stuff. I have seen it shrink tumors within 7 days. It fights off inflammation and contains ingredients that fight cancer cells. Great for fighting joint inflammation.

Yucca is an herb native to North and Central America used by ancient and modern civilizations to address musculoskeletal discomfort. Active ingredients have been isolated from Yucca that have shown to have antioxidant properties to help support natural inflammatory response.

Boswellia comes from the same resin of trees that produce frankincense. It contains naturally occurring compounds that are said to interfere with the enzymes that contribute to inflammation and discomfort.

Devil’s Claw is a South African herb that is used for discomfort in bone, joints, and other tissues. Data from 14 clinical trials in people conducted over the last 40 years suggest Devil’s Claw has beneficial properties in the musculoskeletal system. Because it contains “bitters” as an active ingredient, which encourages appetite but also stimulates the secretion of stomach acids, it should be used with caution in those at risk for gastric (stomach) upset. It is also recommended to check competition rulings before using products containing Devil’s Claw.

Cat’s Claw supports a healthy inflammatory response, primarily due to the glycosides present in the herb.

Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that helps combat oxidative stress and supports a natural inflammatory response for overall health.

White Willow - Due to its rich blend of antioxidants and organic compounds, willow bark functions to support a natural inflammatory response throughout the body.

Grape Seed Extract (GSE) is rich in antioxidants to help support a healthy inflammatory response and cardiovascular health. It appears that the antioxidants in grape seed extract work cooperatively with Vitamin E to help neutralize free radicals.

Feverfew is a weedy perennial that belongs to the daisy/sunflower family of flowering plants. It consists of some compounds that support a natural inflammatory response.
