When it comes to joint issues, it can be difficult to find the right path to help our babies. All dogs respond to medications, supplements and diet differently. So this isn't set in stone for every dog. This is a basic guide to help you get started on helping your dog to feel better quickly. And not all of these are recommended for one dog. These are just all of the choices available to you. I believe a good diet, correct and balanced supplements, a good preservative free joint supplement, exercise and therapy with minimal medications and vaccines is the best way to go. For help in finding the right solution for your dog, please feel free to email me.
Tip: Stiffness after rest usually indicates joint pain, and you may notice your dog 'loosening up' with activity. Lameness which worsens with exercise usually indicates soft tissue pain (muscle or tendon). First of all, always consult with your vet before starting any program. Consider what diet you are feeding and plan on making a change. ALL kibble dog foods cause many illnesses and especially joint issues. Switch to homemade (RAW preferably). Drug induced joint problems The drugs most associated with drug induced lameness are antibiotics, especially sulfa drugs, erythromycin, penicillins, and cephalosporins. Genetics also play a role in the development of this syndrome as well. Doberman pinchers are predisposed to develop drug induced lameness when administered sulfa drugs. BEWARE OF THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) If your pet is being treated for arthritis, most veterinarians will prescribe steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Physical side effects can be scary- including gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney and liver damage. If your pet’s stomach and liver survive prolonged use of NSAIDs, his joints may not. Used long term, these drugs can destroy the cartilage making the arthritis and pain worse. Rimadyl (one of the more popularly dispensed NSAIDs) lists as reported possible adverse drug events by the manufacturer: gastrointestinal vomiting, anorexia and/or abnormal stools; pathology of the liver with or without general hepatic dysfunction; Neurologic (nerves and brain pathologies), urinary pathologies with increased urination, thirst, increased Blood Urea Nitrogen, Creatinine and/or abnormal urinalysis; behavior change; dermatologic (skin problems), immunologic/ allergic pathologies and Death. Some reports contained multiple events. In one study in people in Norway, physicians examined the x-rays of 294 arthritic hips. They found that the hip joints of patients taking NSAIDs had significantly greater damage than those not taking the drug. Steroids like prednisone, prednisilone, injectables like Kenalog and Vetalog etc are devastating to the body over long term use. They can actually bring on heart disease, diabetes, eye damage, osteoporosis, non-regenerative anemia, weaken the immune defense to disease and upset the body’s water and electrolyte balance that weakens the body. Vaccine induced Immune arthritis is seen in pets in which the distemper vaccine may be involved in cases of immune arthritis, as distemper vaccine particles have been found in some of the affected joints. Diet Watch the diet for potatoes, sugars, preservatives, corn, soy, wheat and all grains including feeding kibble foods. Do not give nightshade foods. Eliminate all of these. Carbohydrates (corn, wheat, rice, soy, millet and even potato) are pro-inflammatory foods; they promote inflammation. All herbs are an optional alternative and may take a month or two to see the full benefits. Milk Thistle is HIGHLY recommended with daily meals (for up to 30 days). So start with a joint support supplement according to the severity. ALL diets should consist of digestive enzymes, probiotics, fish type oils (sardine/anchovy, calamari, green lipped mussel). Add joint support supplements. Use natural forms of vitamin C which include either Camu Camu which has highest amount possible or Rosehips. High quality Fish oil (unscented) |
Cannabis Oil CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a fairly new dietary supplement that has become extremely popular worldwide in recent years. New research into the health benefits of medicinal marijuana has revealed that, aside from THC (the psychotropic substance in cannabis plants), there is also a non-psychoactive substance that has potent health benefits: CBD. This product is a safe and tested cannabinoid that has shown a lot of promise as a dietary supplement. It is often used to calm anxious pets that don’t like travel or have separation anxiety. In general CBD can:
If your pet is suffering from anxiety, mild pain, or has inflammation problems, CBD can help. There are no known side effects from taking CBD, and results are seen within the first three days. Just remember: This is a dietary supplement with CBD for cats and dogs, not a medication for serious illnesses. Consult with your veterinarian before giving your pet any dietary supplement. |
Rosehips
Dogs can greatly benefit from Rosehips as well. Rose hips is a great additional supplement for treating and preventing arthritis and many other diseases. Dosage can be small dogs: 1/4-1/2 teaspoon daily Med Sized Dogs: 1/2 -1 teaspoon Large Size Dogs: 1 -2 teaspoon If you are looking to purchase Rosehips, I use this one for me and my dogs. |

No Signs to Mild Cases:
For dogs not showing any joint issues but have reached maturity, or are involved in agility or any other strenuous activities, or have a genetic history of joint issues.
You should start your dog on joint supplements at 6+ months of age. Prevention is a much better option than dealing with an actual arthritic disease.
A daily joint supplement at its maintenance dose is sufficient to give daily. Give fish oils or some other high quality omega 3s. Make sure you give Vitamin E at least 3 times a week with your fish oils. Human Vitamin E is fine. If you purchase the soft gels caps, you can poke a hole into the softgel with a pin and squeeze out. It's thick so you may want to use a large safety pin. Some gelcaps are softer than others. Find a good quality one. The oil in the bottle is the easiest to use.
Place your fish oil liquid or capsules in glass bottles. Glass is impervious to air, while plastic isn’t. Finally, placing your fish oil in the fridge, just like you would fresh fish, will extend its life and slow the oxidation process.
high quality Fish oil (unscented) A diet high in carbohydrates can also deplete vitamin E. Note: If your dog has had previous surgeries for a joint problem, your dog should be on joint supplements no matter what age. |
Joint Support supplements should include a mixture of different ingredients to get the full benefits of joint support. When giving fish oils, always make sure to give Vit E at least 3 times a week as well. Click here to see why it's important.

If the system is weak or in dire need of an immunity boost, you can double the dosage of this for awhile. organic powder Alcohol can aggravate joints. Nature's Answer (alcohol free) has a variety and low cost at Iherb.com. Note: The trace element manganese is necessary for the synthesis of proteoglycans and serves as an antioxidant. The biochemical reactions that make glycosaminoglycans from glucosamine will not occur efficiently unless manganese is present in the body. Recommended for arthritis and health: Vitamin C, E, magnesium, manganese and B-Complex. Other antioxidants include superoxide dismutase (S.O.D.), glutathione (reduction of oxidative stress), Ubiquinol, and pycnogenol (an antioxidant that is promoted as an anti-arthritis agent in people, which may also be helpful for relieving pain and inflammation in arthritic pets). If you add Greens Powder then that is all you will need to get adequate amount of vitamins and minerals although extra Vit C is needed for old, ill and/or diseased dogs. Many people believe that calcium deficiency causes hip dysplasia in dogs, but the lack of vitamin C is really the cause. One of the root causes of ACL tears is a manganese and magnesium deficiency. Calcium-For dogs, supplement high amounts of calcium only in the first year of life, or during pregnancy and nursing, as too much can cause kidney stones (use vitamin C along with calcium to prevent this totally). All dogs will require a certain amount of calcium. You can find calcium in two places. A seaweed calcium or ground eggshells. Colostrum-Colostrum naturally enhances and helps in tissue repair. Problems with joints and connective tissue, such as hip dysplasia, degenerative arthritis, or cruciate ligament issues, have also improved with colostrum supplementation. It appears that joint-related problems, that originally were helped with glucosamine and then declined, improved when they were given colostrum. From research, it appears that IgF, is essential for the utilization of the glucosamine, and without adequate amounts of it, the continued use of glucosamine does not respond. You see, without growth factors, all the chondroitin in the world won't help, if the body can't replicate cells, then it can't heal. The growth factors in colostrum can facilitate the body's own regenerative processes and even better utilize supplements such as chondroitin and glucosamine. TIP: Colostrum works best on an empty stomach. Wait 10-20 minutes before giving your animals their food or 2 hours after for best results. Powder: https://naturesfarmacy.com/dogzymes-colostrum/ |

For Severe Cases:
Before prescribing NSAIDs for long-term use, a Heska ERD urine test to look for microalbuminuria, which can be an early sign of kidney disease. If the Heska ERD test is positive, a risk-benefit analysis is used to determine whether to use NSAIDs, or look for other options. Consider doing titer testing for vaccines instead. Research any medications you are giving. Make sure they are safe as can be. Know what you are giving to your dog, before you give it and the risks involved. NSAIDs such as Rimadyl, Previcox, Deramaxx, Metacam to name a few, are all NSAIDs and they all have high risk side effects..liver and kidney damage, & even death. When giving medications, cocktails ( Rimadyl, Robaxin (muscle relaxer), and if nerve related-Gabapentin seem to work well. Make sure your vet works closely with you on this. When your dog's quality of life is reduced, then NSAIDs are definitely recommended to help sustain a pain free quality of life. Do NOT let your dog suffer but don't give the NSAIDs if at all possible or AS NEEDED. Anything over 2 weeks is considered long term medication and can be fatal. PLEASE USE CAUTION!! Try a SAFE alternative to NSAIDs and pain medications. **Gabapentin may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness. Including: antidepressants, antihistamines, pain relievers, anxiety medicines and muscle relaxants. BEWARE OF THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF ANTI ARTHRITIC DRUGS If your pet is being treated for arthritis, most orthodox veterinarians will prescribe steroids, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Physical side affects can be frightening- including gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney and liver damage. If your pet’s stomach and liver survive prolonged use of NSAIDs his joints may not. Adequan Canine (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) is a prescription, water-based, intramuscular, polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) that helps prevent the cartilage in your dog’s joint from wearing away. It helps keep the cartilage healthy and intact, so that the bone in the joint cannot touch other bones. Adequan Canine (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) is administered two times a week for four weeks. The drug is injected intramuscularly to ensure it reaches the critical parts of the joint. It goes to work in the joint in about two hours and stays in the joint for about three days. With Adequan® Canine you should see signs of improvement within four weeks. Your dog may begin to act like the playful, active dog you remember. Adequan Canine Sterile Injection (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) is administered by intramuscular injection for the control of signs associated with non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic arthritis of canine synovial joints. Adequan Canine contains polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG). Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan is characterized as a "disease modifying osteoarthritis drug." Adequan Canine contains 100 mg/ml of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. The recommended dose of Adequan Canine is 2 mg/lb body weight (.02 mL/lb), by intramuscular injection only, twice weekly for up to 4 weeks. Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. Glucosamine Possible Interactions If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use glucosamine or make any adjustments to your medications without first talking to your health care provider. Warfarin (Coumadin) -- Glucosamine may increase the blood thinning effect of coumadin and may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding, which can be serious. Speak with your physician. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- If you take NSAIDs to relieve the pain of OA, taking glucosamine may reduce the dose of NSAIDs you need to take. Since NSAIDs can cause stomach bleeding, reducing the dosage can be helpful. Talk to your doctor, however, before starting to take glucosamine, since it can take awhile before you experience any improvement. Blood sugar lowering medications or insulin -- Glucosamine may change the dose needed for blood sugar lowering medications and insulin. If you take these medications for diabetes, talk to your doctor before taking glucosamine. Doxorubicin, Etoposide and Teniposide -- Glucosamine may interact negatively with these drugs. Source: University of Maryland Medical Center Types of Glucosamine to Avoid: Glucosamine alone is perfectly ok, but you should avoid glucosamine sulfate * NaCL (or KCl) (or if the ingredients list says potassium or salt after the sulfate). Some companies are very tricky about this - unless it just says glucosamine sulfate or HCL, you likely are getting an inferior product. It is easy for people to see the glucosamine sulfate and simply ignore the KCl on the end. We are not all molecular scientists after all. The NaCl and KCl ("the salts") refer to even more (unneeded but cheaper) carrier molecules that can be up to 30% of the product's weight. Some carrier molecule is needed (such as sulfate or HCL alone) because raw glucosamine is unstable by itself - it needs to be bound to the sulfate or HCL carrier in order to be stored for any period of time. So if you have one of the KCl or NaCl forms of the sulfate when you think you are buying a quality product, you are actually getting 30% of your dose as ordinary table salt. Be advised to watch out for products with those markings. The less active amounts of glucosamine you get, the slower your relief will be. At some point it will likely be so low that you will get no benefit at all. NAG (N-Acetylglucosamine or N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine), is another rare form of glucosamine but should generally be avoided due to its relative ineffectiveness and expense. What Kind of Glucosamine Should I Buy? There are so many different forms and types and brands of glucosamine out there and the quality varies widely. It is advised that one seek out a reputable manufacturer (one that offers a full, no questions asked, money back guarantee) and follow the old adage that you get what you pay for. It can also be helpful to look at the label before you buy or get recommendations from other people you know that use glucosamine. A good liquid brand should run you about a dollar a day or slightly less and include glucosamine sulfate or HCL or both and other "synergistic" (effective in combination) ingredients as well. Again, glucosamine in tablet form is not recommended due to low absorption issues. Functions: Although Glucosamine HCl is normally found in shellfish, it can also be created from the fermentation of corn, according to Wikipedia. Glucosamine is necessary in the body for the structure and function of the articular cartilage. It assists in maintaining the elasticity and integrity of the connective tissue and assists in building, maintaining and repairing cartilage, tendons and ligaments. It is most commonly used as a topical ointment or oral supplement to treat osteoarthritis. The same anti-inflammatory and elasticity properties that make it a great treatment for osteoarthritis may also contribute to its use in skin products and cosmetics. It's also been known to help in the treatment of psoriasis. Safety Measures/Side Effects: In the United States, glucosamine is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for medical use in humans. However, there is no research that notes any negative side effects of this natural ingredient. People with allergies to shellfish may even find success and no reaction when using a product containing Glucosamine because the shellfish allergy is a result of contact with or ingestion of the shellfish meat, while Glucosamine is made from the actual shell. Reduce toxins:
Do not use chemicals on your lawn or on your dog including flea and tick applications. Remove or reduce vaccines. Yearly vaccines are not needed. Try titer testing instead. Rabies is a 3 year vaccine by law. Find a vet willing to give a 3 yr rabies and ask for the Thimerosal Free. Do not give anything containing preservatives. If in doubt, throw it out. If you need help with ingredients..please please please..feel free to ask me so that you make sure your not going against everything you are trying to do to help by creating a toxic environment. Anything going on or in the body is especially important! |
Once arthritis has become fully developed to the point where we have active joint degeneration and/or excess bone formation, I’m not sure we can ever really “cure” it. What I hope for is to reduce the pain so the dog can move around relatively pain free, and you want to create a healing environment around the joints so the animal’s natural healing abilities can work their own miracles. I know from experience that most holistic therapies take a month or more before the best results to be seen, so don’t give up too soon. And also, I understand that we may have to continue with the herbs and other treatments throughout a dogs lifetime. I’m confident we can improve your dogs quality of life for the time they have remaining, and I am happy to know that with the holistic approach, I am helping without causing harm.
Warmth can help reduce arthritis pain. Thick, orthopedic beds that insulate your dog from the cold floor or ground as well as cushioning the joints provide a lot of comfort. Exercise All dogs need some form of exercise. It's good for their overall physical and mental health. When joints hurt, its harder for them to do a lot of exercise. According to the severity of each dog, take short walks (50 ft) as often as possible without causing the dog any pain or overdoing it. Pay close attention and don't over do it or you could cause more pain and problems. Keep any excess weight off also. Weight can cause more problems as well. |
Other Natural Therapies
Dogs with arthritis often respond to acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. Massage therapy can also be very beneficial, and is something you can learn to do yourself at home. Hydrotherapy using warm pools or underwater treadmills is becoming increasingly popular and can be extremely helpful, particularly for dogs recovering from surgery or injury. If you don't have a facility close by for Hydrotherapy, purchase a small pool where the water will come up to the top of the dogs legs where they meet the body. You add a solar blanket and/or solar heater to it to help keep the water warm. You want it to be around 85-95 degrees when entering the pool. If you need immediate relief, fill your tub (garden tub is best depending on your dog's size) with warm (not hot) water and add some Epsom salts in. Soak your dog for approximately 15-20 minutes. This will help with some pain relief. Don't do it if your dog is in a lot of pain and you can't get your dog in and out without stressing him/her out. Try a small tub or kiddie pool or whatever works. But Hydrotherapy will help your dog get back on all fours and rebuild muscle and even help to lose weight. It's a great tool to use for recovery from surgeries etc. |
You can also invest in purchasing machines like the chiropractors use, for use at home. Using ultrasound can help reduce inflammation. Also the "Activator" tool. Dogs are usually jumpy and don't care much for this tool, but after using it for awhile..eventually they adjust to it. A lot of it is the noise it makes and the quick light thud/pressure on the bones. For a dog with lifetime joint issues, you may want to look into doing your own therapy at home. Long term use makes up for the cost up front compared to lifetime Chiropractor visits.

Combo TENS, EMS, IF, & Microcurrent Unit
The InTENSity Select Combo Electrical Stimulator is a portable electrotherapy device featuring four therapeutic modes: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), Interferential (IF), and Microcurrent (Micro). Relieve your pain with the TENS program! TENS is a non-invasive, drug-free method of controlling pain through small electrical impulses. These impulses mask the pain in the treated area and help you carry out daily activities pain free. Therapy stimulation for your muscles in the EMS program. EMS or NMES is Electrical Muscle Stimulation designed to help treat muscle injuries. This program’s function is to cause muscle contractions in efforts of helping rehabilitate the muscle tissues along with directly working on muscle motor neurons. This therapy is popular for all muscle-related injuries, muscle re-education, and improving blood flow to the muscle groups. Reduce Chronic Pain & Inflammation with the IF program. Interferential Stimulation or "IF" for short, is a Chronic Pain therapy & anti-inflammatory based treatment modality. Interferential Stimulation provides powerful and deep stimulation by using two alternating-currents of different frequencies that work together to produce an interferential current. This current has been proven to stimulate sensory, motor, and pain fibers offering chronic pain relief where TENS may not be strong enough. Regenerate muscle tissues and fibers using Microcurrent. Microcurrent therapy includes treatments for pain, Diabetic neuropathy, age-related macular degeneration, wound healing, tendon repair, Plantar fasciitis and ruptured ligament recovery. Most microcurrent treatments concentrate on pain and/or speeding up healing and recovery. It is commonly used by professional and performance athletes with acute pain and/or muscle tenderness as it is drug-free and non-invasive. Indications For Use: For TENS, Interferential (IF), or Microcurrent: Symptomatic relief of chronic pain Post traumatic pain Post surgical pain For EMS/NMES: Relaxation of muscle spasms Increase of blood flow circulation Prevention of disuse atrophy Muscle re-education Maintaining or increasing range of motion Immediate post-surgical stimulation of lower leg muscles to prevent venous thrombosis |

Stem Cell Surgery (Find a vet near you) (If Adequan works for your dog, this may work for your dog as well.)
The success rate on this is 70%-95%. Well worth a shot of giving your dog his/her life back. (Cost is anywhere from $1800-$3000+). Your vet can do this after taking an online course with Vet-Stem. Also Medivet Biologics does stem cell as well. Results last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. You also pay for storing the remaining cells with Vet-Stem. Check on pricing also for future injections and storing of fat cells. Ultrasound Therapy-Ultrasound therapy uses an ultrasound probe to send high-energy sound waves into desired tissues. As the tissues absorb the waves, they are converted to heat. In that sense, ultrasound therapy works very similarly to heat therapy. (This is like to the Alphasonic machine mentioned above.) Prolotherapy In Animals-Prolotherapy has an 80 to 90% success rate of animals returning to normal function, in cases of pain and limping due to ligament injury or joint degeneration. Some of the conditions treated successfully with Prolotherapy by the veterinarian include canine hip dysplasia and anterior cruciate ligament injuries. |
Note: Splints and braces are good for soft tissue injuries. For arthritis, do not use hard splints and braces.

BIOSCAFFOLD
The BioScaffold is a medical device procedure that for dogs and horses with musculoskeletal injuries. The implant procedure is often done under heavy sedation or general anesthesia, and takes approximately 45-60 minutes. Patients are able to go home the same day and can return to normal activity within 3-4 days of the procedure. The BioScaffold is not a stem cell procedure. This injection contains no cells and is a scaffold which allows existing cells to infiltrate and more effectively heal tissue. The BioScaffold is unique, and is comprised of collagen which has been opened up (untwisted) so it resembles early development collagen (young collagen). The open collagen structure permits infiltrating cells to see a repair code, often like opening up a book. This open collagen (book) contains instructions for tissue repair cells already in the body, giving them instruction on how to more effectively repair tissue. Thermotherapy Thermotherapy is the use of cold (cryotherapy) and/or heat over an injured area of the body. Cryotherapy is typically used alone during the first 24-72 hours post-surgery or injury (the acute inflammation period). After that, it is often used in conjunction with heat therapy. Cryotherapy has the following benefits: * Decreases inflammation * Causes a localized decrease in blood flow followed by an increase in blood flow. Superficial heat therapy is typically used after the first 2-3 days post-injury. It is often used in conjunction with cryotherapy. It has the following benefits: * Increases blood flow and decreases pain * Increases enzyme activity (which speeds healing). * Increases muscle contractility and stretching capability Heat therapy should not be used during the acute inflammatory phase of an injury (first 72 hours). |

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
The usual protocol for the initial treatment of muscle and tendon injuries includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injured area. This combination prevents further injury, reduces pain, inflammation, and swelling and thereby encourages healing. Not exactly an easy task when dealing with dogs and cats. Physical therapy is usually applied when the acute stage of injury has subsided. It usually involves massage, stretching, and exercises, many times augmented with ultrasound and acupuncture therapy. Non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also commonly used. Surgery is reserved for the more severe and intractable injuries. However a novel approach, very different from the usual methods and involving blood platelets, shows much promise and is causing much excitement in the orthopedic and sports injury world. When tissue is injured, the inflammatory response is triggered. This is necessary even though the heat and swelling are unpleasant. Inflammation stops the spread of infection and clears away damaged tissue. However, healing of the tissues cannot take place until the inflammation process is switched off. The fact that platelets play a role in the control of both of these processes forms the rationale behind PRP treatment. Most everyone thinks of blood platelets as being responsible for blood clotting after injury, which is true. What many people do not know is that blood platelets serve two other important functions. Blood platelets are responsible for bringing the white blood cells to the injured area to clean up the remains of dead and injured cells. Most importantly to this discussion, blood platelets release growth factors that are directly responsible for tissue regeneration. These substances are called cytokins and include platelet derived growth factor, epithelial growth factor, transforming growth factor, insulin growth factor, and other important growth factors. By ultimately inhibiting inflammation, platelets form part of the mechanism that switches the process off, and stimulates healing by producing the various tissue growth factors mentioned above which stimulate new blood vessel growth. It is for these reasons that PRP treatment has been promoted for tendon, ligament, muscle, and joint injuries, which have been historically normally slow to heal. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is derived from blood that is drawn from the patient and run through a special centrifuge, which separates the blood’s less dense components from its heavier ones. This process distills a portion of the blood to a platelet concentration level that is much richer than regular blood. At the same time, it helps to remove both red and white blood cells from the platelet rich part of the plasma. Plasma containing this concentrated level of platelets provides an abundance of the previously mentioned growth factors, which are the proteins in the body that stimulate cells in the tendon, ligament, muscle, or joint to start the healing process. When PRP is injected into damaged tendons or ligaments, cells in the tissue—along with new cells circulating in the blood—are stimulated to bring even more new cells to the injured site. Therefore, the growth factors derived from platelets initiate connective tissue healing, bone regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, and generally stimulate the wound healing process by accelerating epithelial and epidermal regeneration. Because the patient’s own blood is used to make the specialized plasma—this is known as an autologous process—there is no risk of the treatment being rejected, as it might be if the blood had been provided by a donor. Although PRP technology is considered cutting edge technology, it was initially developed 20 years ago for heart surgery to aid with wound healing and blood loss. Its benefits are now being applied towards the facilitating of healing of muscle, tendons, ligaments, articular and meniscal injuries. PRP has also been utilized for bone repair; it can be added to harvested autogenous bone or to a mixture of autogenous bone and freeze-dried bone/alloplastic material to improve the consistency for handling during surgery and minimizing particulate migration as well as to add increased platelets (i.e. increased growth factors) into the area to stimulate healing. Depending upon the condition being treated, the pet may require nothing more than a local anesthetic for the administration of PRP or may require a ‘twilight’ anesthetic. A real advantage to PRP therapy is that it may not only facilitate the healing process, it may in certain cases provide an alternative to surgery. While platelet rich plasma therapy offers a promising solution to accelerate the healing of bone, muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint conditions naturally without subjecting the patient to invasive surgical procedures and significant risks, there is no one, standard protocol. Frequently, chronic injuries require more than one injection. In both acute and chronic injuries, injections may be combined with an exercise or physical therapy program, acupuncture and/or Class IV laser therapy to enhance the success of the treatment. |
Other supplements important to your pets health and recovery:
NOTES: Why these are important for your dog Digestive enzymes for dogs Digestive enzymes for dogs are essential for the dogs' physical well-being. Unfortunately, cooked and processed foods are depleted of enzymes. It is therefore advisable to give enzyme supplements to your dog especially if he/she eats cooked or processed foods. This page looks at information on digestive enzymes - what they are; how they help with digestion; and the various benefits that enzymes provide for our dogs. What are Enzymes? Enzymes are "organic catalysts". They either initiate or speed up chemical reactions in the body, from digestion to tissue repair, and from hormone function to energy production. Enzymes are present in every cell in both plants and animals; and can exist both in active and inactive forms in cells. They are, however, extremely sensitive and can be permanently inactivated or destroyed by high heat, as well as elements such as chemicals in food preservatives, artificial colorings and flavorings, and so on. Enzymes are needed to digest the food eaten. For this purpose, two types of enzymes can be used to perform this task - the enzymes that come from the food we eat (food enzymes) and the enzymes that are produced internally from the digestive organs (digestive enzymes). However, as mentioned above, enzymes can be inactivated or destroyed when there is a change in temperature. Specifically, when food is cooked or processed at temperatures 118°F or above, the enzymes in the food are destroyed. (It means if you feed your dog foods cooked under high heat, such as kibbles or canned food, your dog cannot get enough digestive enzymes from the food). Without these food enzymes, the body has to work harder and create more digestive enzymes to fully digest the food. How do Enzymes Help Digestion? Food in its natural, uncooked state, contains live enzymes. It follows that if our dog consumes raw food, the enzymes in the food can greatly aid in the digestion process. If your dog eats raw food, the chewing process releases the enzymes contained in the cells of the food. Also, when a dog eats, the pancreas secretes the proper amounts and concentrations of enzymes for digestion as well. The enzymes that aid in food digestion include: Protease - responsible for breaking polypeptides (proteins) into amino acids. Amylase - responsible for reducing carbohydrates (starches and other polysaccharides) to sucrose, lactose, and maltose. Lipase - responsible for digesting fats into fatty acids, glycerol. Cellulase - responsible for breaking down fiber. What will Happen when Food Enzymes are Depleted? When there is insufficient food enzymes for dogs, the full digestive burden will be placed on the dog's pancreas to produce digestive enzymes. The result? An over-stressed digestive system which eventually can lead to improper food digestion and nutrient malabsorption. And the consequences of improper food digestion? The undigested proteins, fats and carbohydrates promote the growth of unwanted bacteria which, over time, upsets the delicate balance of intestinal microbes, resulting in: bloating diarrhea gas bad breath body odor lethargy and sluggishness With improper digestion and nutrient malabsorption, a number of physical problems will arise. Here are some common ones: A compromised immune system Allergies (food, seasonal, etc.) Pet Arthritis (e.g. osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia) Skin problems (e.g. hot spots) Cancer Premature aging What are Other Benefits of Enzymes for Dogs? Besides aiding in food digestion and nutrient absorption, enzymes for dogs are also essential for: strengthening the immune system; stopping coprophagia (the habit of eating stool); decreasing the risks of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis, and toxin build-up; increasing T-cell production (T-cells are cancer-fighting cells); promoting weight loss. Enzymes for Dogs - Do All Dogs Need Them? Even healthy dogs can benefit from enzyme supplementation for optimal digestion and toxin elimination. With better digestion, our dogs will have less gas, firmer stools, and fresher breath. They will also have a healthier, shinier coat with fewer skin problems. Enzymes as supplements are particularly beneficial for dogs who:
Enzymes for dogs have been found to be very successful in treating stool eating, GI problems, skin irritations, as well as beneficial to dogs with allergies and arthritis. Enzymes for Dogs - When Should They Be Supplemented? If you want to use digestive enzyme supplements to help your dog with food digestion and absorption, give the enzyme supplementation with meals. On the other hand, if you want to unleash the power of digestive enzymes to help with your dog's metabolism and systemic wellbeing, you can give the enzymes to your dog one or two hours after meals. Given this way, the enzymes will not be used for digestion purposes; instead they will be circulating in the dog's bloodstream to help with the following processes:
Enzymes for Dogs - Are They Safe? Extensive research has been conducted with pets (and people as well!), and it has been found that enzymes for dogs are extremely safe. No side-effects have been found from the supplementation of enzymes to dogs. ****************************************************** Probiotics Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive tract. There are a variety of different species belonging to genera that include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, and Enterococcus (often abbreviated by first initial only in names). Some species, such as Lactobacillus, live primarily in the small intestine, while others, such as Bifidobacteria, reside in the large intestine (colon). Check the expiration date on any probiotic you buy for your dog; if the product doesn’t have one, don’t buy it! Benefits: All dogs can benefit from probiotics, which aid digestion and modulate the immune system. Probiotics produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which inhibit the growth and activity of harmful bacteria, such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Clostridium perfringens, as well as providing other benefits to the intestines. Human studies have documented the effectiveness of certain strains in treating diarrhea, irritable bowel, and intestinal inflammation (fewer studies have been conducted on dogs). Probiotics may help prevent urinary tract infections, and can even reduce allergic reactions by decreasing intestinal permeability and controlling inflammation. Species with specific strains known to benefit dogs include Enterococcus faecium (strain SF68) and Bacillus coagulans. Bifidobacterium animalis (strain AHC7) has been shown to reduce the time for acute diarrhea to resolve in dogs. Certain strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus improve frequency and quality of stools in sensitive dogs. Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG (LGG) is effective in preventing and treating diarrhea in humans, and may benefit dogs as well. Probiotic products may contain one or several strains. Cautions: Some probiotic species require refrigeration in order to remain viable; follow label recommendations for storage. It’s questionable how many survive passage through stomach acid into the digestive tract, and whether they then colonize or must be continually replenished. Many products, particularly those that are not refrigerated, contain fewer live organisms than their labels claim. Freeze-dried probiotics may last longer than refrigerated or other powdered products, especially if the powder is exposed to moisture (such as when the container is opened and closed). Probiotics in commercial foods may not survive processing or storage. Probiotic products should always provide an expiration date. Dosage: Probiotics are measured by colony forming units (CFUs). Few studies have been done to determine effective dosages, but these numbers are usually in the hundreds of millions or higher. If probiotics are being used to help with digestion, they should be taken with meals, but otherwise they may survive better if given between meals, particularly if taken with liquid that helps to dilute stomach acid and move them more quickly into the digestive tract (maybe give them after your dog takes a big drink). Probiotics may be given short-term or long-term. 10 billion or more are recommended. |
